GENERAL

The Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course (AUCSC) is organized to provide both technical and nontechnical presentation of the practical and theoretical aspects of the causes of corrosion, instrumentation, corrosion surveys, cathodic protection, pipe coatings, and miscellaneous methods of corrosion control. The course is designed for personnel whose work requires a practical knowledge of underground metallic corrosion. The course provides both elementary and advanced treatment of corrosion control subjects.

HISTORY OF AUCSC

The Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course has been held in Morgantown, West Virginia since June 1956. The first Short Course, which 326 people attended, offered 43 classes in five sessions and featured 26 exhibitors. By contrast, today's Short Course consists of about 140 classes in nine sessions, over 90 exhibitors, and approximately 1,000 students. Classes were held on WVU's downtown campus during AUCSC's early years but moved to the Evansdale Campus in 1966.

The organization of AUCSC has changed little since its inception. Over 100 representatives from industry and government comprise the General Committee. Each member of the General Committee belongs to one or more of the various committees responsible for coordination of the Short Course. These include: Programs, Exhibits, Finance, Operations, Scholarships, Publicity, Membership, Testing, and Curriculum. The Executive Committee is comprised of the General Chair, Past Chair, the Chair of each committee, the Executive Advisor, and the Secretary/Treasurer.

The AUCSC Executive and General Committees, along with representatives from industry and government, have cooperated to provide high-quality technical presentations, as well as discussions on practical and theoretical aspects of the causes of corrosion, instrumentation, corrosion surveys, cathodic protection, pipe coatings, and miscellaneous methods of corrosion control. Course presentations, along with textbooks for the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced courses, serve as excellent reference materials for corrosion personnel.
